Coventry Breaks Barriers as IOC’s First Female, African Leader
Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medalist, was unanimously elected IOC President at the 144th Session in Greece on 20 March 2025.
The 41-year-old becomes the first woman and African to lead the Olympic movement since its 1894 founding.
Set to take office on 23 June, her eight-year term will prioritize athlete welfare, youth programs, and sustainability.
Coventry, a former IOC vice president, vowed to “champion inclusivity” in global sports.
Her historic appointment signals a shift toward diverse leadership in Olympic governance.
