Iran’s national currency extended its downward spiral this week, with rates on unofficial trading platforms and black-market monitors showing the rial weakening to around 1,672,500 per dollar, its worst level on record. The new low comes just months after the rial broke through the 1.4 million and then 1.6 million thresholds, underscoring the speed and severity of its depreciation.

Currency trackers and local financial media report that the latest slide has been driven by a combination of tightening U.S. sanctions, a naval and financial blockade that has choked off oil revenues, and persistent political tensions that have deterred foreign investment. The rial had shown brief periods of stability earlier in the year, but analysts say those gains were fragile, supported by capital controls and reduced imports rather than any fundamental improvement in the economy.
