Mandatory hydration breaks at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could generate an estimated €220 million in additional advertising revenue for broadcasters, raising questions about whether the stoppages are motivated by player welfare or commercial interests.
The three-minute breaks, held in the 22nd and 67th minutes of every match, have created new advertising opportunities across all 104 World Cup fixtures. Broadcasters, particularly in the United States, are reportedly selling 30-second ad slots for hundreds of thousands of dollars, with prices rising for marquee matches.
The policy has drawn criticism from fans, players, and coaches, who argue that the mandatory stoppages disrupt the flow and rhythm of football while creating more opportunities for commercial advertising.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has dismissed claims that the breaks were introduced for financial gain, insisting they were implemented solely to protect players from the extreme heat expected during the tournament.
Infantino also stated that FIFA does not benefit from the extra advertising revenue, noting that the organization's commercial agreements were finalized before the tournament began.
