IFAB Rules Embolo Should Not Have Been Sent Off Against Argentina, Report Claims

A report by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has concluded that Switzerland forward Breel Embolo should not have been sent off during his side’s World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina, citing what it described as an improper use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocol.

According to the report, IFAB determined that VAR was used beyond its permitted scope during the incident involving Embolo.

The governing body clarified that while VAR can intervene to correct cases of mistaken identity involving cautioned players, it cannot be used to overturn a referee’s disciplinary decision in simulation incidents.

As a result, the report states that Embolo’s second yellow card, which led to his dismissal against Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinals, should not have been issued through VAR intervention.

The findings have reignited debate over the application of VAR and the consistency of officiating at the World Cup, with the incident likely to fuel further calls for clearer implementation of the Laws of the Game.
