European Football Weekend Wrap-up

This weekend was a defining game week for all of Europe’s top 5 leagues.

The English Premier League witnessed a goals galore the game week started with League leaders Arsenal thumping Bournemouth 3-0 to remain top of the league on Saturday before Manchester City closed the gap to 1 point after a 5-1 win over wolves thanks to an Erling Haaland’s 4 goals masterclass later that day.

The Title race seems more heated now with Arsenal a point ahead and City with a game in hand, third placed Liverpool ran a 4-2 riot over Tottenham Hotspur but that might not be enough to land them anywhere close to the title as they are 6 points behind leaders Arsenal with 2 matches left to play.

Chelsea keeps their hopes for a European place alive as they thrashed West Ham 5-0 at Stamford Bridge to leap above Manchester United on goal difference just before the Reds travel to Crystal Palace on Monday for their game week 35 fixture.

The English championship also saw 2 teams -Leicester city and Ipswich Town- confirm their promotion from the championship to the Premier League ahead of next season.

La Liga action saw a turn of events that made Real Madrid mathematically win the Title after a 3-0 win over Cadiz and Barcelona lost 4-2 to Girona on Saturday while Atletico Madrid clinched a 1-0 victory over Mallorca.

The Italian Serie A saw already crowned champions Inter Milan encounter a defeat away to relegation threatened Sassuolo as Ac Milan where held to a 3-3 draw by Genoa, AS Roma hosted Juventus to a 1-1 draw as well as the Italian battle for European football remains the same as it was last week.


Bayern Munich encountered yet another defeat on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart just before an all important meeting with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi finals second leg as fellow semi finalists Borussia Dortmund made a bold statement with a 5-1 win over Augsburg at home before traveling to face Paris Saint Germain later this week.

Already crowned champions Bayer Leverkusen left nothing to chance maintaining their unbeaten run as they thumped Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 as they look to win the treble this season while remaining undefeated.

Other Leagues saw Sporting Lisbon crowned Champions of the Portuguese League after second placed Benfica lost 2-0 over the weekend joining Bayer Leverkusen, PSG, Real Madrid and Inter Milan as the winners of Europe’s top 6 leagues this season.
