The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting prompt action for the release of 20 medical students who were abducted while en route to a conference in Enugu.
The NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Benjamin Egbo, conveyed the appeal in a letter dated 16 August, in which he expressed grave concern over the situation.
The NMA has stated that the students, comprising 12 from the University of Jos and 8 from the University of Maiduguri, were abducted while travelling to an event organised by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS).
The incident is reported to have occurred between Otukpo and Enugu in Benue State, with one of the abducted students purportedly utilising Google Maps to disseminate their location, which was identified as the Oglewu Ehaje area.
The association has expressed profound concern for the students' safety, underscoring the necessity for prompt and decisive action.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) had previously directed the deployment of tactical teams and resources to facilitate the rescue of the students.
In the letter, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) emphasised the urgency of the situation and the potential dangers facing the students, urging the police to mobilise all necessary resources for their swift and safe recovery.
The NMA also pledged to provide support to the police in any way possible to ensure the successful rescue of the students.
