President Yoon Suk Yeol has survived an impeachment motion in the National Assembly, following his controversial attempt to impose martial law earlier this week.
The vote failed to reach the required two-thirds majority after members of Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the session, leaving the assembly without enough votes to pass the measure.
Six opposition parties, including the main Democratic Party, had submitted the impeachment motion, needing at least 200 votes in the 300-seat parliament to pass.
The impeachment attempt was triggered by Yoon's brief declaration of martial law on Tuesday, which he rescinded within six hours after facing significant public backlash.
The failed impeachment vote is expected to further intensify political tensions in South Korea, with opposition parties considering reintroducing the motion and nationwide protests demanding Yoon's removal continuing.
The political crisis has raised concerns among key allies, including the United States and Japan, about the stability of one of Asia's prominent democracies.
