South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been impeached by the National Assembly following his controversial attempt to impose martial law earlier this month.
The impeachment vote, which took place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, passed with 204 votes in favor and 85 against.
This was the second impeachment vote in a week, with the first attempt failing to reach the required threshold.
Yoon’s presidential powers are now suspended pending a decision by the Constitutional Court within 180 days.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president during this period.
The impeachment follows Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law on December 3, which lasted only six hours.
