UK Economic Secretary to the Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq Resigns Amid Scrutiny.

Tulip Siddiq, the UK's anti-corruption minister, resigned today, amid scrutiny over her connections to her aunt, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Although an ethics investigation cleared Siddiq of misconduct, she chose to step down to prevent becoming a distraction to the government's work.

The controversy centered on Siddiq's familial ties to Hasina, whose administration faced multiple corruption allegations. Reports indicated that Siddiq resided in London properties linked to her aunt's associates and was named in corruption investigations in Bangladesh, including a probe into a Russian-backed nuclear deal.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted Siddiq's resignation with regret, acknowledging her significant contributions and leaving the door open for her potential return to government in the future. Emma Reynolds has been appointed as her successor in the Treasury, and Torsten Bell has been named the new pensions minister.

Siddiq's resignation marks the second ministerial departure from Starmer's administration within a year, following Transport Secretary Louise Haigh's resignation in November 2024.
