Sweden to Deploy Gripen Fighters to Iceland for NATO Arctic Air Policing
The Swedish Air Force will deploy a squadron of JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Keflavik Air Base in Iceland in February to support NATO’s Icelandic Air Policing mission, strengthening the alliance’s defenses over the North Atlantic, Greenland and the Arctic Ocean.
The deployment, running from February into March, will see Swedish Gripens operate under NATO command from Keflavik, providing quick-reaction alert and air patrols over Icelandic and surrounding airspace.
Iceland has no fighter aircraft of its own, relying instead on rotating detachments from allied air forces to monitor and secure its skies.
Swedish officials say the mission forms part of the country’s growing role in NATO air defense and Arctic security following its accession to the alliance.
The jets and personnel are drawn from the Skaraborg Air Flotilla (F 7), bringing experience in cold-weather operations and rapid interception duties to the strategically important North Atlantic and Arctic approaches.
