Ibrahim Gusau Resigns as NFF President Amid Football Crisis.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned from his position amid mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.

Gusau formally announced his resignation today Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press engagement in Abuja.

His resignation comes after a difficult period for Nigeria’s national teams. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons suffered the historic setback of missing out on qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup — their first absence from the tournament since its inception in 1991.

Several members of the NFF Executive Committee have also reportedly resigned. Reports indicate that at least eight of the federation’s 13 board members had stepped down, while NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has also confirmed his resignation.

The NFF leadership has also faced scrutiny over the utilisation of government funds released to settle outstanding wages, bonuses and allowances owed to national-team players and officials. Security agencies, including the DSS, have reportedly sought documentation relating to the management of the intervention funds.

The mass resignations have plunged the NFF into a major leadership crisis and could affect the federation’s planned elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. An emergency NFF Congress meeting is expected to determine the next steps and how Nigerian football will be administered during the transition.
