Record opening weekend for Barbenheimer

It's been a record-breaking opening weekend for Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. This weekend saw both movies hit the cinema and so far it has been a hit for fans and critics.

Barbie which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken turned out to have the biggest opening of any movie so far this year with a worldwide opening of $337m on a budget of $145m.

It also scored the biggest opening for a movie directed by a woman. Barbie has received positive reviews, especially for its direction, music, costume, and performance from Robbie and Gosling.

Oppenheimer by acclaimed director Christopher Nolan also hit the cinemas this weekend and though not as successful as Barbie it has been a hit at the box office. It had a worldwide opening of $175m on a $100m budget.

Oppenheimer which stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife received critical acclaim from fans and critics. Particular praise went to Nolan's direction and the cast, the movie also stars Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr and Casey Affleck.
