Tinubu Signs New Electoral Act 2026 into Law
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday assented to the Electoral Act 2026, solidifying Nigeria’s renewed commitment to credible and transparent elections.
The brief signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with top lawmakers, ministers, and senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, said the new Act represents a major step in reforming the nation’s electoral system.
He noted that the legislation demonstrates his administration’s determination to foster accountability, fairness, and public confidence in electoral outcomes.
Key features of the 2026 Electoral Act include tighter controls on campaign spending, improved procedures for electronic transmission of election results, and increased penalties for electoral offenses.
INEC Chairman, described the law as a progressive move that would strengthen the commission’s capacity to conduct free and fair polls. Analysts believe the new Act will enhance voter trust and set the stage for more transparent elections in the years to come.
