Republican Mike Johnson has been re-elected as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in a closely watched vote on Friday, securing 218 votes to 215 for Democratic nominee Hakeem Jeffries.
The election marked the opening of the 119th Congress, with Republicans regaining control of both chambers for the first time since 2019.
Johnson’s victory came after initial resistance from a few GOP members, but last-minute negotiations solidified his position.
In his acceptance speech, Johnson called for unity and pledged to prioritize the interests of the American people, emphasizing a “momentous time in the history of our nation.”
