EU leaders back Greenland’s sole authority over its future
European heads of government have released a joint declaration stressing that only Greenland and Denmark have the right to decide Greenland’s future.
In a joint communiqué issued on Tuesday, European leaders stated that questions about Greenland’s status and trajectory are matters to be settled exclusively by its population and the Danish government.
“Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” the statement said, emphasizing that decision-making power over the territory should remain in local and Danish hands.
The declaration comes at a time of heightened attention on the Arctic, where strategic, commercial, and environmental interests have made Greenland increasingly significant. By underlining that no third countries should influence decisions on Greenland, the European leaders reaffirmed respect for national sovereignty and the constitutional framework linking Copenhagen and Nuuk.
While the document did not reference any particular initiative or negotiation, diplomatic sources indicated it was designed to send a firm message to outside powers that Greenland’s affairs are an internal issue for Denmark and Greenland alone.
