To have a voice in a system where everyone is afraid to speak out for fear of stepping on toes or even losing their life can be refreshing.
Since its inception, the Nigerian people have endured impunity and marginalization from the ruling class for as long as this nation has existed.
To many, the reason Fela Anikulapo Kuti remains a significant figure in their minds is the same reason Martin Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, has become the darling of any Nigerian yearning for positive change.
Like many who stood up for others, they were persecuted and prosecuted. Even Jesus, who came for sinners, met with the same fate.
For a nation like Nigeria with its peculiar challenges, it is imperative for its people to look beyond the messenger, the tone of the message, and the means of communication in order to unravel the mess within the system.
Rather than focusing on distractions in the form of litigations against VeryDarkMan, let's demand the truth and ensure that the culprits are properly locked up—not in furnished "prisons."
Finally, to truly appreciate the gift that is "VeryDarkMan," ask yourself: How much change has been brought about through conventional means in Nigeria? Your votes are conventional, but do they count? The institutions are conventional, but how independent are they?
We must NOT throw the baby out with the bathwater.
