The death toll in the fires that ripped through Maui, Hawaii has risen sharply to 53 people after more bodies were recovered. Governor Josh Green affirmed, "We will continue to see the loss of life."
Last week deadly wildfires ravaged parts of the big island of Hawaii, Maui, destroying hundreds of homes and properties in the town of Lahaina. Maui is an island that is part of the Hawaiian archipelago and Lahaina is a popular tourist destination for visitors to Maui. The town has lots of cultural relics and sites which were destroyed in the fire.
Thousands of people have been flown out and thousands remain in different shelters. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with people suffering from various degrees of burns and smoke inhalation.
President Joe Biden declared the Hawaiian wildfires a "major disaster" spurring federal help for the state. The fires have been 80% contained but the scale of destruction is massive and it'll take years for the city to recover.
The wildfires were fanned by winds from Hurricane Dora that passed 500 miles south of Hawaii. The death toll so far makes this wildfire the second deadliest in modern US history.
