Massive flooding caused by Storm Daniel is claimed to have killed thousands of people in war-torn Libya. Heavy rains brought by Storm Daniel caused multiple bridges and dams to collapse in eastern Libya.
The collapsed dams and bridges led to massive flooding that swept away buildings and roads, giving little time for people to evacuate. A government official who visited the eastern port of Derna told the BBC over a thousand persons died alone in one city.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies declared over 10,000 people are missing so far. This level of destruction and havoc is unprecedented and will cause more pain for the people of Libya who have endured years of war and destruction.
Rescue and recovery efforts are hampered by the fact two different governments run the state of Libya. Several countries including Germany, the US, Türkiye, and a host of Arab nations have offered aid to Libya but it'll be difficult for such aid to reach the eastern part of the country because it is not run by the UN-recognized government.
