India and Pakistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire After Escalation
India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire after several days of intense cross-border violence, easing fears of a wider conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
The truce was announced Saturday following U.S.-mediated talks, after recent clashes killed dozens and raised international alarm. Both countries’ military leaders confirmed the halt to all military actions, effective immediately.
The latest escalation began after a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants. Retaliatory strikes by both sides quickly followed.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States helped broker the agreement, with leaders from both countries pledging to maintain peace while warning that future provocations could threaten the fragile truce.
Further talks are planned to ensure the ceasefire holds.
