U.S House of Representatives passes Tiktok Bill

The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill aimed at forcing TikTok to break away from its parent company, ByteDance, which is a Chinese owned company. The controversial bill was passed with huge support from both Republicans and Democrats.

The US has long accused TikTok of being at risk of Chinese control. There have been fears that China could access user data through ByteDance, but China has downplayed those accusations.

The bipartisan bill was passed on a vote of 352-65 and will be sent to the Senate for approval, then to President Biden for his signature. President Biden has already said he'll sign the bill if it gets to his desk.

The bill gives TikTok a couple of months to be sold by its parent company; otherwise, it will be removed from app stores in the US. TikTok has lobbied its American users to fight against the bill. There are fears that if the bill is signed into law, it could force other western countries to follow suit. TikTok is already banned from being used on government phones in most Western countries and is completely banned in India, which cited security reasons for the ban.
