7.4-magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan 
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake has hit the island of Taiwan. The epicenter of the earthquake is located 18 kilometers south of Taiwan's Hualien city, according to the US Geological Survey.
 
So far, nine people have been confirmed dead, including three hikers who died when rocks fell on them. Over 120 people have been confirmed trapped in collapsed buildings and structures across the island, including 77 trapped inside the Jinwen and Daqinqshui tunnels in Hualien County.
 
The quake also caused landslides in the mountainous region of Hualien. Videos and pictures circulating on social media show dozens of structures and roads damaged as a result of the earthquake.
 
More than 100 aftershocks have been recorded, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Center. Tsunami warnings were issued in neighboring Japan and the Philippines but have been rescinded. 
 
Japan, China, Paraguay, and other countries have offered support and solidarity with the island nation. The Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, has thanked allies and other countries for their messages of support.
