Voters in France continue to arrive at polling stations for the second round of the snap parliamentary election. Polling stations will close at 7 PM local time, with the first projected results expected shortly thereafter.
President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to remain in office until May 2027, regardless of today's vote outcome. The forecast predicts a re-run of last week's low turnout at polling stations, which opened at 8 AM in mainland France, while voters in overseas territories cast their ballots earlier in the weekend.
This vote is crucial for Macron's second-term agenda following his re-election in April. The 44-year-old president needs a majority in the National Assembly to advance his proposed tax cuts, welfare reforms, and plans to raise the retirement age.
Projections from polling firms indicate that Macron's Ensemble! ("Together") coalition is set to be the largest party in the new National Assembly, though it may fall short of the 289 seats required for a majority.
