Lahaina wildfire becomes the deadliest in modern U.S history.

The death toll caused by the wildfires in Maui, Hawaii has hit 89, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in northern California, which killed 85 people and destroyed the town of Paradise.

This wildlife is now also the biggest natural disaster in Hawaii's history and there are fears the death toll might climb higher. Investigations are now underway by the state's attorney general to review the response to the disaster. Most people said they weren't warned ahead of time of the impending disaster.

Federal help has already been deployed to the island, and the police closed back the road to the hardest hit area, Lahaina, after previously opening it up to residents.

Over 2000 properties were destroyed in the fires including important historical sites. Estimates so far of the damage are approaching $6 billion and it'll take years for the city to recover. Right now officials are focusing on providing accommodations for the thousands of displaced people.
