Death toll in Libya Flood Hits 11,000

The United Nations announced on Sunday that the death toll in the city of Derna alone is 11,300 with thousands more still missing. Search and rescue operations continue in the city of Derna and outside where over 100 more died.

The scale of the disaster is huge, rescue teams from different paint a picture of catastrophic destruction and loss of life of epic proportions. Aid agencies say lots of bodies are decomposing at sea.

International aid has started to trickle in from different parts of the region and beyond. The United Nations has called for more aid to the war-torn nation. So far the rival governments are working together to coordinate search and rescue efforts and aid coming through.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced and there are fears of an outbreak of waterborne diseases that could affect hundreds of thousands of children.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain how such a horrific disaster could've happened with little notice from the government and how future disasters can be managed properly.
