Deathtoll rises to 30 after 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Japan
The death toll from the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan has risen to 30, with many more still unaccounted for. The massive earthquake struck on New Year's Day in western Japan, which triggered tsunami warnings across several coastal cities. Ishikawa prefecture was the epicenter and bore the brunt of the damage and all confirmed casualties so far.

Access to several hit areas has been limited as rescuers scamper to find survivors. The earthquake was also followed by dozens of aftershocks. Over 1000 homes were damaged in the coastal town of Suzu, according to the mayor, Masuhiro Izumiya, who described the aftermath as "catastrophic."

Several videos have emerged of buildings shaking and people running out of buildings. In a disaster response meeting, Prime Minister Kishida said, "We have to race against time to search for and rescue victims of the disaster." The military has also been deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Thousands of homes were also left without power amidst freezing conditions. President Joe Biden has offered US assistance to the island nation and sent his condolences to the nation of Japan.
