Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Strike on Russian Airbases, Damages Over 40 Bombers

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has executed a record-breaking drone assault deep inside Russia, damaging or destroying more than 40 military aircraft including long-range bombers across four airbases in an operation called “Spiderweb.” The attack, prepared over 18 months, is the most significant blow to Russia’s air force since the war began.

Early Sunday, Ukraine launched swarms of FPV drones at four Russian airbases: Belaya, Olenya, Dyagilevo, and Ivanovo. These bases, far from the front lines, house Russia’s Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3, and Tu-160 strategic bombers.

Ukrainian operatives reportedly smuggled drones and munitions into Russia, hiding them in wooden containers that were later transported near the airfields.

At the chosen moment, the containers were remotely opened, releasing drones that targeted parked bombers. Ukrainian officials claim at least 41 aircraft, including rare A-50 surveillance planes, were hit—inflicting an estimated $2 billion in damage. Video evidence shows bombers burning and thick smoke at the bases.

Russian authorities confirmed drone attacks and admitted some aircraft were damaged, though they claim most drones were intercepted. The operation highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to strike far behind enemy lines and exposes vulnerabilities in Russia’s defenses.

The “Spiderweb” strike is expected to weaken Russia’s capacity for long-range airstrikes and could influence upcoming peace talks. It marks a turning point in the conflict, showcasing Ukraine’s technological ingenuity and ability to inflict heavy losses on Russia’s strategic air power.
