Senate Confirms Mike Waltz as U.N. Ambassador in Narrow 47–43 Vote, Filling Final Trump Cabinet Vacancy.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Mike Waltz as the new Ambassador to the United Nations in a tight 47–43 vote, marking the end of the last major vacancy in President Trump’s cabinet.

Waltz, who recently served as Trump’s National Security Advisor until he was dismissed in May due to a messaging controversy, will assume his new diplomatic post just in time for high-level meetings at the U.N. General Assembly.

In a 47–43 decision, the Senate confirmed Mike Waltz as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, concluding a prolonged confirmation process after delays and debate over his prior removal as National Security Advisor.

Mike Waltz officially steps in as Ambassador to the United Nations following his Senate confirmation by a 47–43 margin.

His nomination received support from three Democrats John Fetterman, Mark Kelly, and Jeanne Shaheen while Senator Rand Paul stood as the only Republican voting against him.

Waltz, a former Florida congressman and ex-Green Beret, was ousted as National Security Advisor in May after accidentally including a journalist in a private Signal group discussing military plans.

Despite the episode, President Trump chose Waltz for the U.N. ambassadorship in May, replacing Rep. Elise Stefanik, whose nomination was withdrawn amid legislative concerns.

Waltz’s confirmation fills the critical diplomatic position after an eight-month gap, putting him in the spotlight just as global leaders gather for the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

During Senate hearings, Waltz stressed the necessity for sweeping U.N. reforms, stating the organization had strayed from its peacemaking roots after 80 years.

He pledged to confront antisemitism within the U.N. and to ensure strong U.S. engagement to counterbalance China’s influence, reflecting the Trump administration’s global priorities.

Waltz’s appointment comes as major international conflicts continue, and his performance at this year’s Assembly is expected to set the tone for U.S. diplomacy moving forward.
