U.S. Treasury Strikes Final Five ‘Omega’ Pennies, Could Fetch Millions at Auction.

U.S. Treasury Strikes Final Five ‘Omega’ Pennies, Could Fetch Millions at Auction.

The United States Treasury has officially minted its last five pennies, each bearing a distinctive Omega symbol, marking the end of an era for America’s oldest circulating coin.

The final coins were struck at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and will not enter general circulation.

According to Treasury officials, these rare pennies marked with an Omega privy are expected to become prized collectibles and are projected to fetch between $2 million and $5 million each when they go to auction in December.

The decision to halt penny production comes amid mounting costs, with each penny costing up to 3.69 cents to produce, and is expected to save the U.S. government nearly $56 million annually.

While pennies will still remain legal tender, only five were given the Omega mark to commemorate their historic status.

Collectors and numismatics experts say the rarity of the Omega pennies, combined with their significance as the last of their kind, makes them one of the most anticipated coin auctions in U.S. history.
