Dozens Arrested in Russia on Election-Day

50 people have been arrested in several parts of Russia over the past two days in relation to acts of protest in polling stations, according to a human rights monitoring group, OVD-Info.

A number of people were arrested in Kazan, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other parts of the country for various reasons. The Russian presidential election took place over the weekend, and there were recorded acts of protest and vandalism in polling units.

Molotov cocktails were thrown at some polling units, while dye was poured to render votes useless in other polling units. Vladimir Putin is expected to win the elections, which are widely seen as a sham. Most opposition candidates have either been barred from running, exiled, imprisoned, or killed. The few candidates allowed to run haven't criticized Putin or the war campaign against Ukraine.

Moscow has also accused Ukraine of staging attacks in Russian border villages in an effort to hinder elections from taking place. Over the past few days, there has been fighting along the border with Ukraine. Russia has said they have crushed and repelled the attacks, but some sources have disputed the claims.

Protests have been held against Putin and the election by Russians living in multiple countries, including Georgia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Kyiv has continued to launch drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, targeting refineries across the regions that border Ukraine and far deep into Russia.
