U.S. Army Reinstates Transgender Enlistment Ban, Halts Gender-Affirming Care.

On February 7, 2025, the Pentagon, under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, issued a directive prohibiting transgender individuals from enlisting in the U.S. Army and suspending gender-affirming medical care for active-duty service members.

This action follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on January 28, 2025, titled "Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness," which mandates the military to consider only biological sex in its policies and practices.

The directive has significant implications for the estimated 15,000 transgender personnel currently serving in the military. While the policy states that these service members "will be treated with dignity and respect," it also halts any ongoing or planned gender transition procedures, leaving many in uncertain circumstances regarding their medical care and future in the armed forces.

This policy shift reverses protections established during the Biden administration, which had allowed transgender individuals to serve openly and access necessary medical treatments.

The recent changes have prompted legal challenges from civil rights organizations and several state attorneys general, arguing that the new policy violates constitutional rights and undermines the principles of equality and non-discrimination.

Public opinion on this issue appears divided. A recent Gallup poll indicates that support for transgender individuals serving openly in the military has decreased to 58%, with a more pronounced decline among Republican respondents.

As legal battles continue and debates intensify, the future of transgender military service in the United States remains uncertain.
